Broader Impacts: Public Outreach, Education and Engagement for Animal Research
Certificate Description

A certificate seminar for undergraduate and graduate students working in animal research to provide a solid foundation of knowledge about animal research, its role in producing new knowledge and discoveries that benefit the public, other animals, and the environment.  Students will learn about the range of outreach tools and techniques for engagement with the broader public.

Overall Learning Objectives

By the seminar’s end, students should:

  • Know the rationale behind conducting animal research from ethical, moral and scientific viewpoints.
  • Be able to confidently engage with others in fact-informed, thoughtful dialogue about animal research, and have direct experience with creating and disseminating animal research outreach.
  • Understand several social psychology terms and techniques that relate to attitude and behavior change and be able to recognize and apply them to animal research outreach and education programs.
Course Format Overview:

The course format emphasizes participation and engagement via discussion and activities. The seminar will make use of the flipped-classroom model, in which video lectures will be viewed online before class.
