Fellowships

John Young Science Policy & Communications Fellowship

Fellowship Description
The AMP Science Policy & Communications Fellowship presents a valuable opportunity to explore the intersection of health research, science policy, public affairs, and strategic communications. Fellows will gain first-hand experience in shaping national dialogue around biomedical research involving animals, and navigating the evolving legislative, policy, and communications landscape. This fellowship is ideal for early career scientists passionate about science advocacy, policy development, and public engagement.

The fellowship honors the late Dr. John Young, VMD, MS, DACLAM. John served as AMP’s Board chair for over a decade, from 2001 to 2012. He was a leader in advocacy and played a prominent role in the development of many innovative initiatives to support and protect biomedical research. You can read more about Dr. Young here.

 Fellowship Details

  • Eligibility: Early-career students interested in biomedical research, veterinary medicine, or other animal and health research-related field

Key Opportunities & Responsibilities

  • Science Policy and Legislative Engagement
Gain a deep understanding of the federal policymaking process, including tracking science agency appropriations (e.g., NIH, FDA, USDA, etc.), relevant legislative priorities, and funding agency initiatives affecting biomedical research with animals. Furthermore, develop essential advocacy skills to articulate the vital role of animal research in promoting biomedical science. This includes understanding when animal use is necessary, how they are cared for, and how New Approach Methods (NAMs) and other alternative models support this work.
  • Capitol Hill Engagement
Attend congressional briefings, hearings, and relevant coalition meetings related to AMP’s mission. Fellows will draft concise reports or summaries with key takeaways to inform AMP and its partners.
  • Strategic Communications and Educational Tools
Contribute to the creation of factsheets, talking points, infographics, and other educational materials that clarify the necessity of animals in research and counter misinformation from anti-research groups. These tools will empower researchers and institutions to effectively engage with the public, media, and policymakers.
  • Independent Capstone Project
Design and execute an independent project focused on a policy or communication issue relevant to AMP’s mission. This project should align with the fellow’s career interests and may take the form of a report, toolkit, policy analysis, or strategic campaign.
  • Policy Monitoring and Outreach
Assist with the drafting of AMP weekly newsletter issues and other relevant communications documents on the latest developments in research policy, public perception, and research threats. Emphasis will be placed on proactive and protective measures the community can take.
  • Professional Development and Mentorship
Fellows will be encouraged to engage in professional development workshops, and one-on-one mentorship with AMP staff and external partners throughout their tenure. These opportunities will not only help fellows broaden their understanding of various career paths in science policy, advocacy, and communications, but also strengthen their confidence when ready to enter the job market.
