Animal research is a vital component of scientists’ search for treatments and cures.
Americans for Medical Progress nurtures public understanding of and support for the humane and necessary use of animals in medicine through:
- Working to inspire the next generation of research advocates through its materials, exhibits at scientific meetings throughout America, and several fellowships in Public Outreach.
- Providing information to bolster public opinion of animal-based research through its website, social media, various publications and posters.
- Highlighting stories of those who have benefited from research to illustrate the relevancy of animal-based research, and of animals in research facilities to illustrate the care they receive.
- Promoting fair and accurate media coverage of the need for animals in research by serving as a resource for reporters, and through commentaries, interviews, and journal articles.
- Interacting and collaborating with state, national and international research organizations in order to maximize resources and develop a tapestry of services and information in support of biomedical research. See what other organizations have to offer by visiting our Animal Research Links page.
Supporting the Full Biomedical Research Toolbox
AMP supports continued investment in innovative non-animal research methods and their adoption wherever they can reliably and safely replace the involvement of animals, and our full statement is available here. Modern biomedical research increasingly brings together animal models, human-based methods, computational approaches, and emerging technologies, with each providing different and complementary information.
We also recognize the ethical responsibility that comes with the use of animals in research. Animal use should be scientifically justified, animal welfare prioritized, and every effort made to replace animals where possible, reduce the number needed, and refine procedures to minimize pain and distress.
No single research approach can currently answer every biomedical question. AMP supports using the most appropriate scientific tools for each question while continuing to develop better methods, improve animal welfare, and advance research that benefits both human and animal health.
We believe the public deserves accurate information and meaningful context about why animals are involved, how they are cared for, and what their contributions make possible.
