Physicians know that animal research is, and will continue to be, an important resource for biomedical research leading to the development of new diagnostics and therapies.
By virtue of their authority, expertise, and the trust placed in them, medical professionals are in an unparalled position to foster a greater public appreciation of the role laboratory animals play in enhancing and lengthening our lives. Indeed, the American Medical Association has called on its members to express their “concern with regard to the impact of the animal rights movement on the conduct of biomedical research, as well as support for the proper and humane treatment of animals in research.”
Physicians and other health professionals face many opportunities to be advocates for biomedical research. But where to begin? How to prepare for the task? And what happens when one is faced with a tough question?
Physicians Speaking for Research, produced by Americans for Medical Progress with a partial grant from the American Medical Association Foundation, is designed to give physicians the resources to speak comfortably on the topic, and to enhance public understanding of the value of scientists’ ethical and humane use of animals in biomedical research.
