Americans for Medical Progress (AMP) protects society’s investment in research by nurturing public understanding of and support for the humane, necessary and valuable use of animals in medicine.
Threats by animal rights extremists hurt medical progress. AMP provides accurate and incisive information to foster a balanced public debate on the animal research issue, ensuring that among the voices heard are those whose lives have been touched by research and those who work in the field. Through various specialty publications, outreach initiatives and the media, AMP informs the public of the facts of animal-based research. AMP also distributes timely and relevant news, information and analysis about animal rights extremism to the research community through its news service.
AMP is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit charity supported by the nation’s top universities, private research facilities, research-related businesses, scientific and professional societies, as well as by foundation grants and contributions by individuals.
AMP’s Board of Directors is composed of physicians, researchers, veterinarians, university officials and two Nobel laureates in medicine.
AMP has presented a variety of forums and campaigns to champion biomedical research:
-
Created the Albert B. Sabin Heroes of Science Awards to honor outstanding advocates, scientists and public officials who have made significant, life-enhancing contributions to the progress and perseverance of biomedical research.
-
Worked with several biomedical research organizations and patient groups to inaugurate AMP’s Women’s Heath Campaign, designed to enhance the public’s awareness and appreciation of the role of animal-based research in developing treatments for diseases that affect women.
-
Organized reporter briefings throughout the United States to provide journalists with in-depth background information and context for coverage of scientists’ use of animals in medicine.
-
Collaborated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science to convene a media forum marking the 30th anniversary of America’s “War on Cancer,” with a focus on the vital role laboratory animals played in the development of many successful therapies.
Through information, education and advocacy, AMP is paving the way for medical progress.
